What to order during a coffee shop job interview

Job interviews over coffee have become increasingly popular, blending the formal and the casual to create a relaxed atmosphere. Here’s why your drink choice matters during a coffee shop job interview—and how to make sure it reflects positively on you.

Keep it simple

When in doubt, simplicity is key. A classic coffee or a straightforward tea is quick to prepare, won’t distract you with elaborate ingredients, and helps prioritize the conversation over any unnecessary complications.

As tempting as a relaxing beverage might seem, avoid anything that could create a mess. You want to remain calm and composed, and dealing with a drink that’s hard to manage might throw you off. Stick with drinks that are easy to sip without causing stains or spills.

If you don’t like hot tea or coffee order water or even an iced coffee. Do not order nothing as this makes the interviewer feel awkward enjoying their drink whilst watching you with nothing.

Avoid overly complicated orders

While it’s tempting to showcase your personality with a fancy drink order, avoid anything too complex or niche. Not only could a long, intricate order slow down the process, but it may come across as high-maintenance. Additionally, a detailed order runs the risk of mistakes, and the last thing you want during an interview is the added stress of a botched drink.

Should you order food?

One of the biggest etiquette dilemmas in a coffee shop interview is whether or not to order food. The general rule of thumb is simple: don’t order food unless the interviewer does first.

If the interviewer orders food and invites you to do the same, keep it light and easy to manage. Avoid anything too messy, difficult to eat, or that requires utensils. You don’t want to be stuck trying to answer important questions while managing a messy sandwich. A small pastry or muffin can be a safe choice, but always focus on keeping the conversation uninterrupted.

The golden rule: don’t let your drink distract you

No matter what you choose, make sure the drink doesn’t become the focal point. Your interview should be about your skills, experience, and why you are the best person for the role. Constantly stirring, adding sugar, or managing a complicated beverage can take away from the conversation.
