For university applicants deciding whether to move away to a new city for university is a very tough decision. Whilst it is a fantastic opportunity and a chance to broaden horizons, there is a lot to think about. So here are some things to consider when moving away for university.
Accommodation
When moving away to a new city for university the first thing you’re likely to think about is where you will live. Most students tend to live in student accommodation either in the halls of residence offered by the university or in privately owned student accommodation. Here you will share a flat with other students although you will have your own bedroom (maybe even your own bathroom). Depending on the type of accommodation you will either have your meals provided or you will need to cook for yourself. Another option is to rent a flat near the university during term time. This can be costly so it might be worthwhile sharing with other students (this way you can split the rent).
Register with a GP
If you are planning to spend several weeks of the year away from your home address it is a good idea to register with a GP and dentist close to the University. This means you’ll be able to access healthcare if you need it. Your university will likely have a GP and dental practice (perhaps even several) affiliated with the University who are willing to accept students as new patients. Speak to your tutor or student advice centre for a list of surgeries. However, you cannot be registered with more than one GP surgery at once. You will either need to remain registered with your home GP and register with a GP near the university as a temporary visitor or vice versa.

Let people know your new address
If you want to continue to receive mail whilst at university be sure to let people know your new address i.e your bank. Let your family and friends know your new address as well. If you would prefer to avoid the hassle of changing your address you could ask your parents to forward an email to you (or wait until you return home).Â
Get a part-time job
One of the best things that a student can do outside of university is find a part-time job. Not only can you earn some extra cash but you will gain so many valuable skills that you can apply to future jobs just because you are living away from home does not mean that you cannot get a part-time job. Have a look around the local area and find places that offer part-time work such as retailers or hospitality venues. Your university may also have student jobs available on campus.Â
If you are planning to return home during the holidays you will need to consider how this will impact your part-time work. This is where it may be best to find a job on campus where you can work during term time.Â
Get to know your new city
Moving to a new city is an exciting experience. Even if you are living on campus you can still explore the city and surrounding area. Find out what shops Cafes bars on activities are nearby and where the nearest public transport stops are. This is something you could ask your fellow students (great way to start a conversation). Your university student Association may also be able to help with this. In fact, some universities offer tours of a local area during induction week for new students.
