Should you take your car to uni?

1

Moving away to uni is one of the most exciting times in your life. Having your own flat, meeting new people and looking after yourself is likely to be exciting but also a bit nerve-wracking. Whilst you are packing up all of your stuff and getting together everything you need there is one decision you also need to make. Are you going to take your car to uni?

There are advantages to taking your car to uni including:

  • Not having to wait around for public transport
  • Having the freedom to go anywhere at any time
  • Being the nice friend who gives your flatmates a lift to the shops

But there are many reasons why you would not want to take your car to uni. If you are undecided ask yourself these three questions.

Do you need your car during term time?

Consider whether you need your car whilst at uni. If you are living in student accommodation you will likely be very close to the uni campus (perhaps even within walking distance). Some unis also offer a shuttle bus service between the campus and the accommodation.

Remember, there will be lots of other transport options nearby such as bus, train or metro especially if your uni is located within the city.

Is there somewhere to park your car on the uni campus?

Not all universities have student parking available and some will only have a small number of spaces on a first come first served basis. For the universities that are city-based, parking on streets or in private car parks will be expensive.

If you decide to take your car make sure you plan in advance where you will park and find out if there are any restrictions (avoids pesky parking tickets).

Can you afford it?

Remember, cars come with lots of expenses including petrol, insurance, road tax, maintenance and any parking costs (and parking tickets if you are not careful). Leaving your car at home means you don’t have to worry about paying for petrol and parking, therefore, you can free up some of your budgets.
