Universities often invite applicants to an interview to learn more about why they wish to study there and whether they are the right fit. Like any other interview, this is a two-way process and is also an opportunity for you to learn more about the university. Therefore, you should come prepared to ask the interviewer some questions about the university and/or the course.
Not only does asking questions demonstrate your interest and enthusiasm for the course but it is also a chance for you to learn more about studying there. After all, choosing a university is a huge decision and asking questions will provide more information that will help you make your choice.
Here are some useful questions to ask at a university interview:
What sets this university apart from others?
Students typically apply to more than one university course so this question gives the interviewer an opportunity to explain how this course and university are different to others. This can be a good question to ask if you have more than offers from various universities to study a similar course.
How does this university support students find employment?
Every university has a careers service that offers employment advice to students. However, the university may offer additional support such as organising careers and networking events, meetings with potential employers, on-campus jobs, industrial placements and mock interviews.Â

Are there any extracurricular activities or clubs I should join?
Universities offer much more to students than to obtain a degree. At university, you have the opportunity to take part in various extracurricular activities such as student councils, societies and teams, volunteering and workshops. Some of these may be related to courses and others may be beneficial for your future career.
University staff often encourage students to take part in extracurricular activities to widen their university experience. Therefore, it is likely to impress them if you show an interest in these at the application stage. Plus, they’ll be able to recommend activities that could be beneficial for your course or your future career.
What is the campus life like here?
A university campus is much more than just buildings and lecture halls. Each university has its own campus life which forms a huge part of the overall student experience.
Finding out about campus life can help you decide whether you feel you will fit in on campus and if you will like studying there.
What challenges do students often face when studying here and what is the best way to deal with these?
It’s no secret that students will sometimes come across challenges at university. Asking about these can help you foresee some of the obstacles you may encounter as a student and start to think about how you will overcome these. The interviewer may also be able to offer advice about how to deal with these challenges.
What qualities does this university look for in a student?
Universities can offer lots of opportunities for students and in turn, there are lots of ways in which students can bring value to the university. Asking this question can help you understand what the university expects from its students and how you can apply your skills and knowledge.
