Moving into student halls or shared accommodation is one of the most exciting parts about going to university. It is a brand new experience and the chance to make new friends and learn a whole new set of skills. Despite this, the reality of sharing a flat with other people can be challenging at times. Here are some things to consider to make sharing a flat at university a success.
Respect each other’s routine
Try to coordinate everyone’s routines as best as you can (although there may need to be a bit of compromising). If you are an early riser but some of your flatmates prefer to sleep in, try to avoid making too much noise in the morning. Likewise, avoid blaring loud music at 2 AM if the rest of your flatmates are asleep.
Some other areas you will need to agree to a routine is:
- Access to the bathroom (unless you are lucky enough to have your own)
- Mealtimes (no point in everyone fighting over the microwave)
- Use of facilities such as the washing machine

Share the chores
There are two easy ways to do this. Either everyone is allocated specific chores which they will always be responsible for. Although this keeps things simple, it could eventually become boring. Another option is for everyone to take turns at all chores. If you go with this option it may be a good idea to draw up a weekly or fortnightly cleaning rota.Â
Spend some time together
As much as everyone needs their own personal space, try to make time to socialise. This makes things easier when it comes to planning chores/shopping or discussing issues. Perhaps you could have a weekly movie night or choose one night of the week to order a takeaway to share.
Don’t steal your flatmate’s belongings
It’s understandable that sometimes you and your flatmates may forget what belongs to who. If you accidentally use someone else’s things be sure to replace them. This is common courtesy and will prevent any arguments later on.
Share the cost of household products
When it comes to household products that everyone shares such as washing up liquid, toilet rolls etc it’s only fair to share the cost. The easiest option is to each chip in a set amount each week to buy household products. Another option is to take turns purchasing them.
Be respectful of privacy
Everyone needs their privacy from time to time. Even if you and your flatmates are best friends there will be times when people need their personal space.
