How to request a read receipt in Microsoft Outlook

Microsoft Outlook offers a feature called read receipts, which allows you to request confirmation when your email is opened.

A read receipt is a notification sent to the sender when the recipient opens and reads their email. It provides confirmation that the message has been received and viewed, giving the sender peace of mind and allowing them to follow up if necessary.

How to request a read receipt

Compose your email: Start by composing your email as you normally would in Outlook. Type your message, add any attachments, and address it to the recipient(s).

Access the options tab: Once your email is ready, navigate to the Options tab in the ribbon at the top of the email composition window.

Request a read receipt: Within the Options tab, locate the “Tracking” group. Here, you’ll find a checkbox labeled “Request a Read Receipt.” Check this box to enable read receipt requests for this email.

Send your email: With the read receipt request enabled, go ahead and send your email as usual by clicking the “Send” button. Outlook will now track whether the recipient opens your email and send you a notification accordingly.

Remember, not everyone is comfortable with read receipts, so be mindful of the recipient’s preferences. Some may choose to decline the request, and it’s important to respect their decision. Reserve read receipt requests for important or time-sensitive emails where confirmation of receipt is crucial. Overusing this feature can come across as intrusive or distrustful.
