Everyone knows how annoying it is when your internet connection is slow. It always seems to happen when you are actually using the internet.
This usually results in a process of switching your WiFi off then on again, turning your phone off for a few minutes, switching the router off then on again and anything else you can try that will regain your much needed internet connection. We’ve all been there.
I’ve gathered together some hints and tips that will help avoid a slow or even lost internet connection.
- Switch off internet enabled devices that use your WiFi when they are not in use where you can. If you aren’t using your laptop, tablet or Smart TV switch it off.
- Move the router to a better position in your house. Although some people prefer this to be out of the way, having your router stuffed in a corner or on the bottom shelf of the TV stand is more likely to result in a slower connection. Ideally, the router should be in the middle of the house and in an area where you spend most of your time. No point having your router upstairs if you are downstairs most of the time.
- Switch your internet off. Don’t worry not all the time. Once a month or even once a week completely switch off your internet connection for an hour or so. This will give your router a break and a chance to refresh its connection. You could do this at a time when you know you will be out of the house for a while meaning you won’t have to be without the internet.
- Install anti-virus software. These are designed to prevent computer viruses and malware from findings its way on to your computer which will slow down your connection speed (and cause other damage).
- Consider having set times for people in your house to use the internet. Having too many people using your internet connection at once can overwhelm it and cause it to slow.
- Put a password on your WiFi. This stops other people nearby accessing your WiFi without asking you first.
