How to handle new job anxiety

Starting a new job is an exciting chapter in your life. You should be very proud – after all the employer chose you over the other candidates.

A new job can also be a time of uncertainty and even anxiety especially if you are moving to a new organisation. Perhaps you are worried about meeting new people or how you will fit in. You may also be concerned about your new role and responsibilities.

There are many reasons for feeling anxious about a new job; they are all perfectly natural. Here are some tips to help you handle new job anxiety:

Be prepared

The more you know about your new job, the less anxious you’ll be. Before you start, research the company, review the job description and responsibilities, your offer letter and learn about the company culture. Also, make sure you understand the expectations of your role and what sort of tasks you will be doing.

Doing this will help you understand what you can expect from your new job and company. This way you’ll feel more familiar with your new role and increase your confidence before you start.

Remember, on your first day, you will likely have the opportunity to meet with your new manager and colleagues. This will give you the chance to ask any questions or seek clarity about anything you are unsure of.

Build a support system

It’s important to have people you can turn to for support during this transition. Reach out to colleagues, friends, and family members who can offer encouragement and advice.

It may help to talk things through with someone you trust to help calm your nerves. They may be able to help you develop coping strategies and manage your anxiety.

Set realistic expectations

You may feel pressure to prove yourself early on, but it’s important to set realistic expectations for yourself. Give yourself time to adjust to your new role and responsibilities.

Don’t be too hard on yourself if you don’t pick some things up straight away. It is only natural you will find some parts of your new job easier than others but that is not to say you won’t learn the more difficult aspects in your own time.

Focus on learning

Approach your new job as an opportunity to learn and grow. Be open to new ideas, take notes, and ask questions. The more you learn, the more confidence you’ll feel.

Practice self-care

Make sure you take care of yourself during this transition. Get enough rest, exercise regularly, and eat a healthy diet. Also, take breaks when needed and engage in activities that help you relax and destress.

You may find it helpful to practice mindfulness techniques to help you relax.

Your nerves are only temporary

New job anxiety will not last forever. After a few days when you become more settled, you will start to feel more comfortable with your new role and organisation. As you get to know your manager and colleagues and become more familiar with everything you will soon feel settled in.

Remind yourself that this is an exciting opportunity to begin a new chapter in your life and meet new people, build your skills and grow as a person. Think about what motivated you to apply for the job in the first place. Whilst easier said than done, try to focus on the positive aspects of your new job instead of feelings of anxiety.
