How to close a cover letter

1

A cover letter is a document that accompanies your resume when you apply for a job. It is typically a one-page letter that introduces yourself to the potential employer, explains your qualifications, and expresses your interest in the job position.

Usually, a cover letter will include an opening paragraphic and separate paragraphs explaining why you are interested in the role and the company and why you are the right person for the role followed by a closing paragraph.

This article will outline how to close a cover letter and hopefully convince the employer to offer you an interview.

Express gratitude

Start your closing paragraph by expressing gratitude for the reader’s time and consideration. You can say something like, “Thank you for considering my application” or “I appreciate your time in reviewing my qualifications.

Reiterate your interest

Briefly restate your interest in the position and the company. For example, “I am very enthusiastic about the opportunity to work at [Company Name] and contribute to [specific project or aspect of the company].

Summarize your qualifications

Recap briefly why you are a strong fit for the job. Highlight one or two key skills or experiences that make you a suitable candidate for the position. For instance, “With my background in [mention relevant experience or skill], I am confident in my ability to [specific task related to the job].

Express readiness for further discussion

Indicate your willingness to further discuss your qualifications in an interview. You can say something like, “I would welcome the opportunity to discuss my qualifications in more detail during an interview.

However, avoid creating the impression that you automatically assume you will be offered an interview. For example, do not offer to contact the company to arrange an interview or state that you are looking forward to an interview.

Be positive

Do not use the last paragraph to point out any weaknesses in your application or apologise for not having a specific skill or experience. Focus on the skills and experiences that you do have and why they make you the best person for the job.

Remember, just because you are missing one of the required skills does not mean that your application will be rejected.

Closing line

Use a formal closing line, such as “Sincerely,” “Kind regards,” or “Best regards,” followed by your full name. You may also wish to leave space for an electronic signature.

Remember to keep your closing concise, professional, and confident. It should leave a positive impression and invite the reader to consider your application seriously.
