The Scottish Government has announced that people aged 18-25 in Scotland will receive free NHS dental care as of today. It is thought that this will benefit up to 600,000 young people in Scotland.
This new policy will come into effect on August 24th and there is no requirement for young people to ‘opt in’.
This comes after the Scottish Government announced extra funding for dentists in Scotland to help dental practices recover from the Covid-19 pandemic.
Health Secretary Mr Humza Yousaf MSP said in a statement:
“We’re committed to scrapping NHS dental charges for everyone in Scotland, and removing them for everyone aged under 26 is our first step on that journey. Today’s announcement means around 600,000 young people aged under 26 will benefit from free dental care from 24 August”
Any young person who is not currently registered with an NHS dentist can contact their local health board for advice. Contact details for local health boards can be found by visiting NHS Inform’s website https://www.nhsinform.scot/care-support-and-rights/nhs-services/dental/dental-emergencies
