How to haggle on the price of a car

0

Cars are expensive objects. However, it is easier than you think to negotiate a small discount or a freebie when buying a car. Research shows that more than half of people who try haggling when car shopping are successful.

Choose the right time

If possible don’t visit right at the end of the month or the start of the next month. Most people get paid at the end of the month so will be more likely to go car shopping then. This will mean more customers for the car dealer so fewer discounts will be offered.

Research the car and use the information to your advantage

Find out the car’s vehicle and MOT history. You can do this very easily online. When viewing the car, make a note of any problems such as dents, scratches or outstanding repairs. Use this information to negotiate a discount.

Stick with the same sales advisor

If you visit the dealership several times make sure you talk to the same sales advisor and try to build up a rapport with them. Be polite and friendly to them as well. If they like you, they will be prepared to go the extra mile. However, if you are rude or irritating they won’t see any reason to do something for you.

Keep an eye on the car dealership

Whenever you drive or walk past it regularly have a quick look in. If there is a particular car you like pay close attention to it. If it has been there for a while the chances are it has already been discounted so the likelihood of the dealership offering any more is pretty small. However, if it has not been there long the price will probably be able to be reduced.

Ask to speak to the decision-maker

Quite often, car sales executives will need to consult with their manager before offering a discount. They actually do this to make you think you are getting a really good deal (people will think because the manager is involved it must be a big discount). Ask politely if you can talk to them and negotiate with them directly (rather than the sales executive speaking to them on your behalf). After all, they are the ones with the power to make the decision.

Ask for freebies

If the dealer really won’t offer a bigger discount but you still really want the car, see if they can offer you anything else. Car dealerships can offer a range of free gifts such as a full tank of petrol, car mats, a full valet or even a free sat nav or dashcam. They may also have branded gifts such as bags, keyrings, pens or travel mugs.
