Time Flies: The Apple Event In A Nutshell

Yesterday (15th September) Apple held its latest keynote event entitled ‘Time Flies’. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the event was delivered online with no audience.

Speakers included Apple CEO Tim Cook and Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams. The event was filmed around the Apple Campus in California and was live-streamed across a number of platforms including Apple’s website, YouTube and various social media platforms.

The event unveiled several new Apple products including a new iPad and Apple Watch. Here is an overview of the products:

Apple Watch

Two new Apple Watches were revealed – Apple Watch Series 6 and Apple Watch SE.

Apple Watch Series 6 has a new tool called a pulse oximeter which measures blood oxygen levels. This will be helpful for people with medical conditions that impact their heart or lungs.

Apple Watch SE has the same design as Series 6 but uses the same interior as Apple Watch Series 5.

Apple Watch also has a new feature called Family Setup which allows parents to buy their kids an Apple Watch without them needing to also have an iPhone.

Apple Watch Series 6 with GPS is priced at £379 and £479 for GPS and Cellular whereas Apple Watch SE GPS is priced at £269 and £319 for GPS and Cellular.

iPad

Apple also unveiled two new iPads – a new iPad Air and a new iPad 8th generation.

The new iPad Air is available in five different colours and closely resembles the iPad Pro. It includes a new A14 Bionic chip and uses liquid retina display technology. Unlike previous models of the iPad Air, it is also compatible with the second-generation Apple Pencil.

Apple also introduced a new basic iPad which sits below the iPad Air and iPad Pro in the lineup of iPads. It is very similar in design to previous iPads and comes with an A12 Bionic chipset (claimed to be 40% faster).

The new iPad Air is priced at £579 for the WiFi model and £709 for the model that includes WiFi and Cellular. The iPad 8th generation with WiFi is priced at £329 and £459 for WiFi and Cellular.

Apple One

Apple One allows you to access Apple’s services i.e Apple Arcade, Apple Music, iCloud, Apple TV and Apple News + all as part of one package.

Apple One has three different plans:

  • Individual Plan which comes with Apple Arcade, Apple Music, Apple TV + and 50GB of iCloud storage. This plan is priced at £14.95 per month.
  • Family Plan which includes Apple Arcade, Apple Music, Apple TV + and 200GB of iCloud storage. This plan is priced at £19.95 per month and can be shared with up to 5 other people.
  • Premier Plan which includes Apple Arcade, Apple Music, Apple TV +, Apple News +, Apple Fitness + and 2TB of iCloud storage. The Premier Plan is priced at £29.95 per month and can be shared with 5 other people.

Apple Fitness +

Apple introduced a new fitness service for Apple Watch called Apple Fitness +.

Apple Fitness + offers workouts from “world-class trainers” with new workouts added each week. These will use soundtracks from Apple Music. Sensors from your Apple Watch will track your progress and will notify you when you reach your fitness goals.

Apple Fitness + is prices at £9.99 per month or £79.99 a year. However, users will get 3 months free with the new Apple Watch.
