During the month of August people in the UK will be able to get a 50% discount on their bill in restaurants, cafes and pubs. This is an initiative launched by Chancellor Rishi Sunak to encourage everyone to support the hospitality sector which has been seriously impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, this is restricted to Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and a maximum of £10 per person.
What restaurants are taking part?
Any restaurant, cafe, pub that serves food, hotel restaurants and canteens can participate provided they have signed up on the UK Government website.
The UK Government has provided restaurants with a range of promotional materials including posters, social media images and stickers to advertise that they are taking part in the scheme and some businesses may also carry out their own advertising.
How does it work?
Between 3rd August and 31st August you can claim a 50% discount on your restaurant bill up to a maximum of £10 per person and there is no limit on the number of people in a group. Alcohol, tobacco, take away food and drink, service charges or food sold as part of a private function are not included in the discount. The restaurant will then claim this money back from the government.
There is no limit on the number of discounts you can receive meaning you can visit as many restaurants as you like within the time period.
It is likely that due to high demand for tables in restaurants you will need to book your table in advance. Out of respect to the restaurant and to other diners if you decide you no longer want your table please call ahead and let the restaurant know. This will allow them to assign your table to somebody else meaning it does not go to waste.Â
