5 things you can do to improve your university experience

0

Your university experience is not just about gaining a degree (although it is a big part of it). They say your uni days are the best days of your life. Here are five ways you can make the most out of your time at university.

Join a society

Every university has clubs, societies and sports teams that are open to all students.

Societies could be:

  • Subject specific such as business, engineering, law, computing, fashion etc
  • Hobbies such as music, film, books, art.
  • Sports
  • Charities

Become a student representative

Most universities have student representatives who will either represent their degree, year group or perhaps a small class of students. Their job is to listen to their fellow student’s views, talk to them about their university experience and take these up with university staff. It is likely there will be regular meetings between student representatives and university staff.

Becoming a student representative is a great way to get to know other students and is also a good addition to your CV.

Get a part time job

Provided it doesn’t take away studying time and doesn’t stop your learning getting a part-time job whilst at uni can help you gain some extra money, develop skills and get some valuable work experience.

If possible you could try to find a job that will help you with your degree. Don’t worry if this isn’t possible as any job can I help you develop transferable skills (skills that you can apply to any job). Further, having a part-time job may also help you find graduate opportunities. After all, the company you work for may have opportunities for you to proceed within the organisation.

Volunteer

Lots of students undertake some volunteering at university either on a regular basis or as a one-off. There are lots of volunteering opportunities such as charities, nonprofits, youth groups or local projects. Your university may also have some opportunities for volunteering such as helping out at events.

Volunteering is a great opportunity to meet new people, develop new skills and of course help others.

See our guide on volunteering for more information.

Take part in student events

Universities will organise events and activities for students to take part in it outwith their course. These may be subject-specific or university-wide.

Taking part in student events allows you to network with other students and staff including people you may not regularly interact with, find out about opportunities such as internships and perhaps learn new things. It also helps you to experience life at your university outside of your degree program.

Examples of events:

  • Guest Lectures
  • Courses/workshops
  • Networking events
  • Careers events
  • Quizzes
  • Concerts
