Here are my top 5 apps that young people should download on to their smartphones.
WhatsApp. This is ideal for those of you who have limited texts allowance. WhatsApp allows you to send and receive messages with other WhatsApp users including images, videos, voice notes and documents. Another great feature is the group chat option allowing you to chat with friends, family, work colleagues or fellow students all as part of one group. A recent addition is the option to video/audio call up to 8 other users at the same time. As WhatsApp uses your phone’s WiFi or mobile data it is entirely free to use.
Microsoft Outlook. Microsoft’s email app that allows you to manage all of your email accounts in one place including personal, work and school accounts. The focused inbox feature ensures any important emails are brought to your attention first. Also, the app includes a calendar feature allowing you to view any scheduled appointments or meetings and receive reminders.Â
Grammarly. The Grammarly keyboard is added to your phone which will scan any text messages, emails, documents etc and alert you to any spelling or grammar mistakes. A basic version of the app is available to download for free however you can purchase a premium version which has additional features such as suggestions for better words and a plagiarism checker. This app is perfect for double-checking your spelling and grammar!
TED. For those of you who have never heard of TED, it is a platform allowing people to share talks that spread ideas on a range of topics. The TED app offers access to an entire library of TED talks allowing you to hear people share their ideas on numerous topics including education, health, science, technology and business.
iTunesU. Created by Apple, iTunesU allows anyone to access free educational courses from universities, colleges, schools and other institutions from around the world. You can sign up to classes, take part in course activities and submit any assignments in your own time. However, you can also watch any videos, listen to podcasts and read through course material without actually signing up to the course. This is ideal for people who wish to learn about new topics from experts in the field.
