10 tips for studying at home

For school pupils or students studying at home for exams or carrying out some other work, it can be hard to stay focused and motivated especially when surrounded by so many distractions.

So lets consider the best ways to effectively work or study at home.

1. Make yourself a comfortable work/study area that is free from distractions. Ideally this should be at a desk or table with a comfy seat.

2. Have drinks and snacks nearby. Tea, coffee, juice, crisps, biscuits, chocolate, fruit or whatever else you fancy.

3. Consider playing some music or have the radio on in the background as long as this will not distract you.

4. Set yourself dedicated times for working or studying. Ensure you allow yourself plenty of breaks.

5. Do not spend too much time staring at your laptop/computer screen. Take regular screen breaks. Consider other ways of studying such as mind maps or written notes.

6. Make sure you will not be disturbed. Switch off your notifications, put your phone on silent or do not disturb mode and ask other people in your house to leave you in peace.

7. Create a study plan and stick to it. Plan what subjects you will study and when. Make sure you assign equal amounts of time for studying each subject.

8. In addition do not work or study in your pyjamas. Although this may be more comfortable, it may be demotivating and not help you get into a work/study zone. Instead get dressed in other comfortable casual clothes. If you have an important video conference call you may wish to wear something more formal.

9. Take regular breaks away from working/studying. Go outside for some exercise, watch some TV or another activity that will relax you for a bit.

10. Keep in touch with your fellow students using phone, group chats or video call. Help each other out, discuss learning activities and most importantly motivate each other.
